Rear Guard Action
Inspired by a scenario played by a friend out in Colorado, Joe and I decided
to play a quick "rear guard action". I spent about 10 minutes thinking it
up so it suffered a little from lack of planning. But as this was a last
minute game, it was ok. The idea was that Joe's French
forces (outnumbering the allies by about 2-1) were trying to destroy a Russian
broken formation (played by the Prussians) and an important General. The
Russians had a small Corps reinforced with a division of Austrians on their
left. The "broken" formation was considered to be disordered and could
only move 1/2 speed but would get a movement bonus once on the road. The
entered the table edge on the far right and had to cross the river to make it to
safety. The Russians were to be reinforced by a small division entering
the table on turn 2 from the back lines.
The game actually turned out to be a blast. We decided that if the
allies had just a few more units that it would have been truly close. As
it was, the French were able to easily break the main Russian line and hit the
"broken" formation before it could cross the river to safety.
